The military first used the candle lanterns as a signaling tool, the glow could be seen in the sky for miles. The lanterns are known by many different names; Chinese Lanterns, Sky Candles, Paper Lanterns, Flying Candles, Thai Lanterns, Thai Sky Candles, Fire Balloons, UFO Balloons, Kongming Lantern, Khoom Loy. Whatever the name, they are all virtually the same, rice paper or mulberry paper constructed on a bamboo ring with a waxy wick.

When lit the flame heats the air inside the lantern. The paper lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern floats gently back to the ground. Often mistaken for UFO’s sending the conspiracy theorists into overdrive, they can achieve heights of over 1,000 feet and fly for about 15 minutes!
